    CLOITRE D'ELNE

Built on an oppidum, the ancient episcopal city boasts a majestic heritage. The 11th-century Romanesque cathedral, visible from the sea or inland, announces the fascinating cloister of grey marble veined with blue. Its construction began at the height of Romanesque art, and continued throughout the Gothic period. Its capitals evolve from the Romanesque of the Roussillon workshops of the 12th century to Gothic art, in a luxuriant flowering of original themes (plant, animal and religious). This major site, listed as a Historic Monument, was the seat of the bishopric of Perpignan-Elne from the 6th century until 1602.

    PALAIS DES ROIS DE MAJORQUE

This superb palace dominates the city from the top of its promontory. Located in the heart of Perpignan, the 13th-century palace was the centre of the short-lived Kingdom of Majorca for almost a century. The palace was the brainchild of James II, who wanted a residence in the mainland capital of his kingdom. The castle was begun before 1274 in late Gothic style and completed after 1300 in Gothic style. The sumptuous chapels reflect the refinement of the period and Perpignan's status as the economic, political and cultural centre of the medieval Mediterranean.
