CLOITRE ET EGLISE ABBATIALE DE ST GENIS DES FONTAINES
The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines was built in 780 by Sentimir. Destroyed in the 9th century, it was rebuilt over the following decades. The church follows a Latin cross plan with very pronounced arms. The 12th-century renovation consisted of covering the building with vaults and decorating the façade, into which a lintel, a major work of 11th-century Romanesque sculpture, was integrated around the door. The cloister was built at the very end of the Catalan Romanesque period (late 13th century). Its special feature is the polychrome marble: white from Céret, pink from Villefranche-de-Conflent and black from Baixas. Visual cards available for the very young and a fun card for 6-13 year-olds. Book of games for sale: €2

PRIEURE SANTA MARIA DEL VILAR
The priory was founded in 1083 by a community of Augustinian canons at the foot of the Albères mountains. The monks transformed a building dating from Carolingian times into a hospice for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, and added a church and cloister. They decorated the main apse with sublime frescoes (11th-12th century): the vividness of the colours and the scenes and motifs depicted are quite astonishing. The canons occupied the priory until the 14th century, when they were secularised. In 1802, the buildings were sold to a farmer for agricultural use. The church became a stable and the hospital room a pigsty. The site was abandoned in 1942 and was soon buried under luxuriant vegetation. In 1993, Mrs Triadou bought the property and, with the help of around a hundred volunteers, began restoration work. Today, it hosts an annual opera festival featuring both secular and religious songs.

Come and discover our unique expertise! The ESAT "Les Micocouliers" is an establishment that perpetuates an ancestral know-how, the work of Micocouliers wood. Today, people with disabilities continue to work this highly flexible, malleable wood to make whips and riding crops, hiking poles and sports equipment, among other things. The ESAT offers free guided tours from Monday to Friday morning. Group visits by prior arrangement.
